in honor of turning 18 today, here is a list of things i realized while being young and (sort of) stupid
You are not a surgeon! Don’t perform surgery on your pet! Don’t amputate a necrotic limb because you let the stuck shed build up. Don’t perform INVASIVE SURGERY to pop eggs out of an egg bound female. Don’t just slather some antibiotic on an open wound!
Don’t have access to a reptile vet? Get access to one! Call your local vet. Hit up Facebook groups. Ask google! Don’t fancy yourself a vet just because you won’t put in the extra effort to find one!

Not everyone can afford vets, what to do then? And don’t say “if you can’t afford a visit to the vet, you shouldn’t own any pets” bc that’s basically saying “if you’re poor, you don’t get to enjoy having pets like my privileged ass”
But see here’s the thing. Having pets is a privelege. It is not a right. Ergo, if you can’t afford basic care and the occasional emergency, you shouldn’t have a pet. People don’t buy cars when they can’t afford them, so why should a pet be any different? Yeah, some vets allow payment plans, and that’s all fine and dandy, but if you’re faced with a severe injury (eg. broken limb, necrosis, infection of any kind, etc.) and you can’t afford to treat it, you either need to euthanize that animal (because it’s the HUMANE thing to do. Self diagnosing and treatment is wrong and inhumane and can be ANIMAL CRUELTY when you do it wrong) or get it to someone who can afford it. Don’t love having a pet more than you love the actual animal. Do what’s best for the animal, not what is best for your wants. That’s what you do when you really love and care about your animal.

Seriously, this. You’re talking about a living animal. If you can’t afford to take care of it you should not have it. It’s not about bashing someone for being poor, it’s about truly caring about the health and well being of the animal. If you truly want what’s best for the animal then you should wait until you can afford to care for it properly.
Performing surgery on an animal if you are not suitably qualified is also illegal…

when my dog had surgery he cried a lot the first night, but he’d stop when i laid down beside him. so i crawled into his cage with him so he’d stop crying and pet him until he fell asleep. i fell asleep with him and when i woke up, that bITCH WAS ON MY BED AND LEFT ME IN THE CAGE
